The
Fall 2011 edition of the KCBC newsletter is now available. Read all about the sixth annual Cranksgiving alleycat food ride, benefiting St. Peters Food Bank, a stretch of advice, members' account of the Paris-Brest-Paris 2011 ride, 2012 ride dates, and much, much more!
In other news, earlier this fall, the boards and membership of JCBC and KCBC have approved the merger. Each board has contributed four members to the task of forming a new, bigger and better
bicycle club serving the greater metropolitan area. Look for more on that this spring.
BikeWalkKC' Paint Campaign
BikeWalkKC is backing up a recent KC Star editorial calling on the
city to provide more painted bike lanes and sharrow markings with a campaign called "Paint". Paint gives you several ways to let Mayor Sly James and your City Council Representatives know that you care about this cause that is so very important to cycling in and through Kansas City. This is a key path to better cycling in the KC metro area. Please take a few moments to visit the site and let your voice be heard.
Merger Proposal
Over the past few years, the idea of merging the Kansas City Bicycle Club and the Johnson County Bicycle Club has been kicked around. This year, both clubs dedicated board members time to consider the proposal by establishing a joint committee. Several meetings were held to review the pros and cons of the idea. The results of this endeavor are documented in a six page report that is available for review. The bottom line is that the committee recommended to each board that a single entity could better serve the cycling needs of the area. After review, each board concurred. As a final step, each club will put to general membership vote the proposal to form a single new entity structured as 501(c) 3 to service the local cycling community. For the Kansas City Bicycle Club, a special membership meeting will be held on Sunday, August 21st at our quarterly meeting/picnic at Little Blue Trace Picnic Area. More details to follow. The board encourages all members to attend and recommends a vote in favor for the proposed merger. Please feel free to review the committee’s report and make any inquiries you may have as a result of such review.

Expanded Member Benefits! Starting in 2011, the Kansas City Bicycle Club will be a League of American Bicyclists 100% Club. What does this mean?
Background The League of American Bicyclists is a national organization representing the interests of the nation's 57 million cyclists. They currently have a membership of 300,000 affiliated cyclists, including 25,000 individuals and 700 affiliated organizations. The League works to bring better bicycling to your community. Through the League, our club obtains insurance coverage for riders. For years, we have been a member of the League in order to obtain cost effective rider insurance. We have also donated excess cash at each year-end in order to better support our common interests. Each year, the club donates money to national, state and local bicycle advocacy organizations.
Our decision By becoming a 100% club, all our members will receive the benefits of League membership. For any current club member that is also a League member, you will not need to pay $35, or more depending upon your selected membership level, to renew your membership. Why are we doing this? Up until 2007, the entire KCBC membership fee went to the cost of the printed newsletter. When we took the newsletter online, we were able to give more to the League each year. Tapping into the League’s 100% club saves existing members money, provides all club members with the benefits offered by League, and supports cycling advocacy.
LAB Benefits:
• 6 issues per year of American Bicyclist magazine, including the annual Bicycle-Friendly
America yearbook.
• 11 issues per year of Bicycling magazine.
• Annual Mileage log.
• Professional bike shipping discount.
• Discounts to League events.
• Discounts from participating retailers.
What’s Next? In the coming weeks, you should receive by mail a welcome packet from the League. It will contain your membership card and sign-on instructions for the League’s web site. Each year when you renew, the League will send you a new membership card, so renew early to assure continuous expanded membership benefits.
